Connection: Family Engagement

Category: Memory Care

Author: Jacy Martin, Memory Care Director

Family involvement in Memory Care is both incredibly valuable and, at times, understandably complex. As dementia progresses for a loved one, families often face new emotions and uncertainty. They also look for ways to stay connected in meaningful ways. At the same time, Memory Care teams can guide families toward purposeful engagement. This support improves quality of life for both the resident and the family. As Memory Care Director of The Parkway Senior Living, these insights reflect how meaningful involvement can grow beyond traditional visits.

Creating Meaningful Moments Together

At The Parkway Senior Living, the team creates engaging opportunities that help families connect. Monthly Family Days include events such as Music Bingo Night, Glow Dance Night, and Game Night. These events encourage participation and shared experiences.

During daily visits, families can also join events, bring a favorite treat, or enjoy a simple activity together. These small, intentional moments strengthen connection and make each visit feel more personal.

Supporting Families Every Step of the Way

The team supports families through guidance, communication, and reassurance. Staff introduce families to others in the Neighborhood, which helps build a sense of community. In addition, educational events help families better understand the journey ahead.

Open communication encourages questions and builds trust. The team also offers reassurance and connects families with others who share similar experiences. This approach helps families feel supported and less alone.

One example shows the impact of family involvement. A resident who once felt withdrawn began to engage more as her family became more involved. They attended events regularly and offered encouragement. Over time, she grew more social, smiled more often, and formed friendships. Her increased engagement showed how powerful family support can be in building confidence and connection.

Families who want to volunteer can start by reaching out to the Memory Care Director. From there, the team provides guidance and helps identify meaningful ways to get involved.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to family engagement in Memory Care but with intention, empathy, and clear guidance, it can become one of the most impactful parts of a resident’s experience. When families are supported, empowered, and invited into meaningful moments, the result is often deeper connection, improved well-being, and a stronger sense of community for everyone involved. Whether you’re a family member looking to stay involved or a care professional seeking new ideas, we hope these insights inspire thoughtful, compassionate engagement in your own Memory Care neighborhood.
