First Impressions: Creating a Welcoming Community

Category: Senior Living

Author: Eric Kerns, Plant Operations Director

First impressions begin before someone walks through the front door. From the landscaping and building exterior to the lighting, cleanliness, and overall appearance, every detail tells a story. A well-maintained community helps residents, families, and visitors feel welcomed, comfortable, and confident in their surroundings.

As Plant Operations Director at The Parkway Senior Living, I believe first impressions set the tone for the entire community. The way our building and grounds look when someone arrives helps shape how they feel about the environment inside.

That is why maintaining a clean, comfortable, and welcoming property matters. I want residents, families, and visitors to see that we take pride in our surroundings.

Keeping Every Area Clean and Tour-Ready

For me, being truly tour-ready means making sure everything is clean and working properly throughout the community.

That includes more than the entrance and common areas. Every part of the building should reflect the same attention to detail, from hallways and shared spaces to the areas residents use every day.

The grounds are just as important. Healthy lawns, maintained trees, and attractive flowers help create a positive first impression before someone walks through the doors.

Keeping everything looking its best requires regular attention to smaller maintenance concerns.

At The Parkway, we use Touch-Up Tuesday to address walls, trim, doors, and painted surfaces that need attention.

Everyday wear can leave scuffs, scratches, and chipped paint throughout a busy community. Having a dedicated time for touch-ups helps us keep these smaller issues from accumulating.

Landscaping is another area where I believe it is important to recognize when routine maintenance is no longer enough.

If plants stay too dry or begin looking unhealthy, they may need to be replaced. I also pay attention to overgrown plants and flowers that hang over their containers.

Keeping those areas trimmed helps maintain a neat, attractive appearance. By addressing these concerns, we can keep our grounds looking welcoming throughout the seasons.

Making Lighting Inspections Part of the Routine

One of the maintenance practices I prioritize at The Parkway is regularly checking the lighting throughout the community.

Lighting plays a big role in first impressions. A bright, well-lit environment helps people feel comfortable while supporting visibility and safety.

Inside the building, I walk the hallways every day to check for lighting concerns.

These daily checks help me identify bulbs that have gone out or fixtures that may need attention. Staying aware of these issues makes it easier to arrange repairs and maintain a consistent appearance.

Exterior lighting deserves the same attention, especially because its condition can be difficult to evaluate during daylight hours.

Once a week, I drive by the community in the evening to inspect the outside lighting.

Seeing the property after dark gives me a better understanding of how the building, entrances, and surrounding areas are illuminated.

This routine helps identify lighting concerns that might otherwise go unnoticed during the day.

It is also a simple practice other Plant Operations Directors can incorporate into their schedules. Walking the interior regularly and checking the exterior after dark provides two different perspectives on the community.

Together, these inspections can help maintain a more welcoming appearance while supporting the safety of residents, visitors, and team members.

For me, first impressions come down to consistency. Keeping a community clean, maintaining healthy landscaping, and making sure the lights are working may seem like everyday responsibilities, but they all contribute to the experience people have.

By staying attentive to these details, we help ensure The Parkway Senior Living remains a welcoming place residents are proud to call home.
