Mastering the Chill: Top Cold Weather Tips from The Parkway Senior Living Plant Operations Director

Category: Senior Living

Author: Robert Setina, Plant Operations Director

As the Plant Operations Director at The Parkway Senior Living. I know the importance of preparing the community and my home for the cold winter weather. To prepare your house for winter weather, start by inspecting and sealing any gaps or cracks in doors, windows, and walls to prevent drafts and conserve heat. Be sure to clean your gutters and downspouts to ensure proper drainage. Thus preventing ice dams that can damage your roof and walls when snow and ice accumulate.

Check your heating system and replace air filters. Consider scheduling a professional inspection to ensure it’s functioning efficiently and safely for the colder months. Insulate your home correctly by adding weatherstripping to doors and windows. Another suggestion is to add insulation to your attic and walls to retain heat and lower energy bills. Remember also to prepare your outdoor spaces. Drain and store garden hoses, cover outdoor furniture, and trim tree branches that could damage your home during winter storms.

I ensure we have Ice-o-Melt on hand for the community’s sidewalks in case it’s needed. I also take the initiative to winterize any areas that won’t be used during cold weather. This involves draining water from hoses and shutting off water lines that lack insulation.

Preparing for wintry weather makes the transition from winter to spring easier and reduces the likelihood of needing to fix or replace water lines. In the long run, it will save a lot of money.

This is also a great time to check to see if there are any gaps under exterior doors. Varmints are more likely to enter the building when it gets cold outside.

A little time and money spent preparing for cold weather will pay off great dividends through energy savings. There is no way to stop “Old Man Winter” from arriving at your door, but with some preparation, he’ll stay outside where he belongs!
