Arrow Senior Living is known for doing things a little differently and challenging the status quo within the industry. It’s just who we are! Even with all the technological conveniences of today such as social media and websites, it is still common to meet individuals with a skewed perception of what senior living looks like. In this blog, I want to share my senior living journey, why I remain committed to the industry, the biggest myth I believe exists, and how to help others overcome the myths surrounding our beautiful Parkway Senior Living community and services.
I started my senior living career in human resources, where I gained several years of experience. Eventually, I discovered my passion for a more hands-on role in operations. Stepping in as an Interim Executive Director at a community, I later obtained an emergency license to independently manage another community.
Building connections with the residents has been the highlight of my career. Everyone in the community has a wealth of experiences to share. Learning from them daily and nurturing relationships keep me returning to Parkway every day. I cherish every bond I’ve formed with them.
Empowering Independence: Challenging Misconceptions in Senior Living
Senior living often faces misconceptions, particularly revolving around the outdated “nursing home” stereotype. I’ve heard people refer to assisted living and memory care as places to “go to die” or where individuals end up when they can’t care for themselves. I believe dispelling these stigmas is crucial, as senior living has evolved significantly.
To challenge the myth of the traditional “nursing home,” it’s essential to showcase examples of residents in assisted living and memory care actively making choices and living life on their terms. I emphasize the importance of social profiles and engagement plans that detail resident preferences, highlight various outings and events, and illustrate the range of care options available.
Encouraging prospects, current independent living residents, families, and guests to participate in activities within assisted living and memory care is crucial. It demonstrates that senior living doesn’t equate to a loss of independence. Instead, it provides additional support to maintain independence.
I hope you found this helpful, and I encourage you to share it with others because here at Arrow, we are committed to reshaping the perception of senior living! Search #whatseniorlivinglookslike, and you will find so many great things that happen in our community every single day.
