Every great meal starts with someone who cares.
Behind every breakfast served, every decorated brunch buffet, and every favorite recipe prepared is a team of dedicated culinary professionals who choose to make a difference every single day. While many cooks, servers, and dishwashers could work in traditional restaurants, they have chosen a different path—one where the people they serve become neighbors, friends, and even family.
In this Staff Spotlight, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who make our dining programs special. Their stories remind us that senior living is about much more than preparing and serving meals—it’s about creating comfort, building relationships, celebrating life’s moments, and making every resident feel at home.
We asked members of our culinary teams to share why they chose senior living and what makes this work so meaningful. Here are their stories.

As Culinary Director at Parkway, I was inspired to work in senior living because I wanted a new challenge. Senior living culinary offers something different from a traditional restaurant. It brings the opportunity to serve the same people each day and learn what makes dining meaningful to them.
That connection adds purpose to the work. Each meal is part of a resident’s daily routine. Each interaction can help create comfort, familiarity, and trust.
Residents have also taught me that life is fleeting. Their experiences are a reminder not to focus only on work. Time with friends and loved ones matters, and those relationships should be valued.
One favorite tradition is celebrating birthdays. These moments give the culinary team a chance to make residents feel special. A birthday meal, dessert, or simple celebration can turn an ordinary day into a meaningful memory.
Success in senior living culinary starts with listening. It means paying attention to what residents enjoy and what they would like to see changed. Their likes and dislikes should guide the dining experience.
That feedback helps the culinary team adjust with care. A successful team listens, responds, and keeps improving. In senior living, that matters because meals are not one-time experiences. They are part of everyday life.
One moment that shows the impact of this work is when a resident pulls me aside after a meal. Hearing that they truly enjoyed something we prepared means a lot. It is a simple moment, but it shows that the work matters.
Those conversations remind us why culinary in senior living is special. A meal can bring joy, start a conversation, and help someone feel cared for. When residents feel heard and satisfied, the whole community benefits.
Every member of our culinary team has a unique story, but they all share one thing in common—a passion for serving others.
Whether they’re preparing a resident’s favorite comfort food, celebrating a birthday, or simply greeting someone with a smile, their work goes far beyond the kitchen. They create moments of joy, foster meaningful relationships, and help make our communities feel like home.
To every cook, server, dishwasher, and culinary leader who chooses senior living over a traditional restaurant, thank you. Your compassion, dedication, and commitment to hospitality make a lasting impact on the lives of our residents every single day.
Together, we’re not just serving meals—we’re serving memories.
