The Parkway Senior Living Invites You to Celebrate National Good Neighbor Month in Their Neighborhood

Category: Memory Care

Author: Elizabeth Thompson, Regional Memory Care Coordinator

September is “National Good Neighbor Month,” and in the spirit of this special time, we would like to take the opportunity to share about a unique part of our senior living community – our Memory Care Neighborhood.

Here at The Parkway Senior Living we strive to make our Neighborhood a special place, not just for our residents, but for everyone who comes to visit and join in our daily festivities. We celebrate being good neighbors every day.

We call our Memory Care communities “Neighborhoods” because it’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood. It is a place where everyone belongs. Our neighborhoods meet each unique individual right where they are. We get to know each other and appreciate our differences. We help each other and have fun together. Won’t you be our neighbor?

In our neighborhood, treating people with dignity is first and foremost. We are tasked with the honor and privilege of caring for individuals who may not be able to communicate their needs or distress. Rather than focusing on what the person cannot do, we strive to see and value the whole person – their likes, dislikes, history, and talents. We recognize the abilities that remain and empower the individual to utilize those abilities. Person-centered care is our specialty!

An abilities-based, positive approach to care creates an environment and neighborhood where individuals living with dementia can live to their fullest potential. A day in a memory care neighborhood should feel joyful, purposeful, engaged, and homelike. A neighborhood such as this benefits not only the residents but the families of the individual as well. We offer weekly support groups and monthly educational opportunities. Education about the disease helps family members better their relationship with their loved one living with dementia.

September is also Alzheimer’s month. There are many ways to support people who are living with dementia. We love our volunteers. The impact they make on our residents is so beneficial. It doesn’t take talent to be a friend to a senior living with dementia. There are multiple ways you can bring joy. I guarantee you will benefit as well. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is also a great opportunity to raise awareness, raise funds, and be an advocate for the disease.

We encourage everyone to be a “good neighbor” and find ways to engage and make a difference in the lives of individuals living with dementia. You don’t need to have a special talent, just a heart for others around you. If you would like more information about volunteering in a Memory Care Neighborhood near you or if you are caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia, we would love to help!
