Parkway Senior Living’s Word of the Year: Appreciation for Success in 2024″

At the beginning of each year, Michael Buckley, Arrow’s personal and professional development coach and “The Chief Feelings Officer,” asks each team member to pick a “Word of the Year.”

To help individuals come up with a word, he offers questions like:

What does your life need more of right now?

And my life will be improved if I have more of what?

Michael reminds us that sometimes, we need more focus. Then, other times, it’s more compassion, and at times, we need more fun! In past years, team members have chosen words such as clarity, confidence, intentional, commitment, consideration, and receptiveness.

This year, team members are actively selecting a Word of the Year for themselves and collaborating to create a word for their community. Picking a personal word and community word is a commitment to doing work on themselves and the “we” and “us” work they want to accomplish as a community.

The Parkway Senior Living word of the year is “appreciation.”

This word is significant because, through 2023, our community experienced many successes including:

  • obtaining 100% occupancy
  • reducing falls month-over-month in the licensed area
  • achieving stability in the leadership team

With all the good news and opportunities, appreciation seemed fitting for an approach to 2024 for staff, residents, stability, health, kinship, and so much more.

By setting an intention for the year, we’re shaping our community for success. It ensures we can focus on our business goals. Appraising our staff daily and showing them gratitude will further reduce turnover and provide staff stability. This prevents the utilization of agency staffing. The intention to drive each day with appreciation puts a positive force into the day and ensures we focus on positive outcomes.

A large part of incorporating appreciation into daily operations will focus on building staff morale. We will infuse appreciation into our problem-solving by focusing on the good and living our core value of being fascinated, not frustrated. Appreciated team members carry a positive trickle-down effect on our residents.

The biggest goal of the year for our community is to reduce staff turnover. Also, achieve a Great Place to Work certification. Additionally, The Parkway aims to receive the Joint Commission Accreditation in 2024. The Parkway and our team exist solely for our residents. We could only achieve our goals if we had the amazing residents we do, allowing us to be a part of their homes and lives.

The chosen Word of the Year should inspire the team. If it doesn’t, it means they selected the wrong word. Hold yourself and others accountable throughout the year. Engage with team members about their Word of the Year and keep it as a frequent topic of discussion in your community. Monitor your achievements using your 2024 Word of the Year, and we eagerly anticipate celebrating them with you!
